Another Year Older...

Well, Christmas has passed and we're close to another New Year.

This is a great time to start thinking about plans and goals for the New Year (some people call them "resolutions") and one of those for a lot of us is to take better care of ourselves - our health as well as our outward appearance.

One of the WomenCorp authors, Krizia of MyBeautyMatch.com, has written another awesome article to help us truly look 10 years younger - naturally. She knows what she's talking about!

Check out her new article and look for lots more in the new year.

Celebrate the New Year safely and plan for a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year!

Pump Up Your Personal Finances!

Another one of our newer WomenCorp partners, Kent Irwin, has published a great article on how to prevent personal financial disasters and how to rescue them if you've already had problems. This is a must-do, a first priority, if you're an entrepreneur or an entrepreneur wannabe. After all, if you can't manage personal finances, how can you manage a business? Real food for thought.

Take a look at Kent's article and then take a look at your personal financial world to see where you stack up.

Have a great day!

Keeping Teens Safe: MySpace in the News Again!

One of WomenCorp's newer partners, Cynthia Bazin, has done it again!

She's got a timely and informative article to help keep kids safe online. Every day lately, we're hearing news about something bad happening to somebody because of Internet activities - MySpace, Facebook, chat, and more. The fact is that a lot of wonderful things happen on the Internet but that's not the focus of national news. It's the bad news we hear first. Let's all work together to eliminate the bad news and start making only good news. Where else but - on the Internet?!

Take a look at Cynthia's article, get started, spread the word, and have a fantastic (and safe) day!

Thinking of Cosmetic Surgery? Join the Club!

Krizia, CEO of Beauty Match Network, is the WomenCorp Beauty expert and has a fabulous new article in our latest issue on what has been a hot topic lately. With so many celebrities "coming out of the closet" about their cosmetic surgery procedures, and so many non-celebrities taking a pragmatic look at growing older, more and more people are looking to cosmetic surgery to turn back the hands of time. No longer the panacea for the puff and pudge of the super-rich, everyday folks are visiting cosmetic surgeons for affordable, subtle or drastic, yet always life-changing procedures.

If you're one of the many who are thinking "maybe" or "maybe someday", take a look at Krizia's newest article and educate yourself before you make any calls, visits, or decisions.

Is It Time To Change Jobs?

Lynn Carnes, the Womencorp career advice expert, has some great advice for anyone thinking about making a career change. A lot of us think about these things at the end of a year. Sometimes a new year is a good time to start a new job - or a new business.

Here's one of Lynn's latest videos here for you to help you to decide if you need to simply change jobs or make the "other career choice". Take a look and find out!

Holiday Shopping: Spending Too Much? Get Fiscally Fit!

Cyber Monday proved to be a big winner for the online retailers. Some reports show that sales were up 21% from last year!

Here's a tidbit from the Associated Press:

"ComScore Inc. reported on Tuesday that consumers spent $733 million online on Monday, a 21% gain from the same day a year ago. ComScore had expected that sales would exceed the $700 million figure."

And who says our economy is not looking up? People are still shopping. That means we're hopeful. We are believing for good things, for money in the bank, for giving to friends and family, and for a great future.

If you're not one of those big spenders because you simply don't have the money, or you were one of the big spenders and know you'll regret it in January, take a look at this video. It's time to get fiscally fit. Make that your New Years Resolution. Instead of losing 10 pounds, add 10 points to your credit score. Add $10K to your retirement account. You get the picture. Subscribe to WomenCorp online magazine and get educated, inspired, and connected. Are You Fiscally Fit? Go here and find out!

Cyber Monday: Focus on Safety

Cyber Monday is here! This is the day when so many online retailers, large and small, offer fantastic discounts, free shipping, and incentives galore to buy your Christmas presents from them.

Since I already did my Christmas shopping (I just couldn't resist bringing that up again!) I didn't do Cyber Monday. But I did think a lot about all those people buying gifts online and hope that they are practicing safe shopping. Sad to say, but there are a lot of scam artists out there now looking to make a quick buck and this is busy season for them, too.

One of our newer partners at WomenCorp, Cynthia Bazin, owner of a security and investigations company, wrote an article in the last issue on Personal Safety and Security Tips. She makes some great points and offers suggestions all of us can use. Check it out!

Christmas Shopping and Black Friday

Did you do it?

Did you get up at 3 a.m. and hit the 4 a.m. sales at Best Buy? Did you sleep off yesterday's turkey and get up with the chickens?

Judging from the early word from the retail world, if you did, you were one of many. Now I don't really need a lot of that stuff right now, and already have some of my Christmas shopping done (or planned), so I didn't hit the sales. Yes, I have already started my shopping! Please, though, don't hate me because I'm practical. You can do it too! Seriously, we had a great Thanksgiving dinner and gathering and there is truly so much to be thankful for. Sometimes, spending that precious little extra time with family on Black Friday is the best way to spend the day.

We here at WomenCorp are busy behind the scenes (since we've already got our shopping done...) planning some fun and profit-focused stuff for the magazine. You have been great to let us know how much you're enjoying the magazine. We have an awesome group of partners and must admit, the content is superb. Next year is already gearing up to be a record-breaker for many of us and we're planning to share our secrets with YOU! That's what it's all about, right? Helping you, our readers, to enjoy the fantastic and profitable life you deserve.

Closing out for today, take a look at one of our newer partners, Kent Irwin and his (yes sir, we now have two men on our partner team!) latest article. At this time of year when we all tend to spend way too much money and then worry ourselves sick in January about how we're gonna recover financially (and lose those 10 holiday pounds), thinking about personal finances in advance sounds like a smart thing to do. Check it out!

Gratitude: The Meaning Of Thanksgiving

If you're reading this, you're probably a lot like me. We've got a lot to be grateful for. Even the ability to read is so easy to take for granted but there are still so many people in the world who can't read. And some who can't see.

When we sit down to list all the seemingly little things - you know, those things we take for granted - it can be overwhelming. With all the depressing things going on in the world, it's truly nice to take a step away from the 24-hour news channel and pay a visit to nature.

I'm grateful for the ability to take a walk in nature, enjoying the fresh air, the beautiful flowers, and at this time of year, the gorgeous fall colors of the trees while they are still dense with leaves. For my family and good health, I'm grateful.

Let's all remember to give thanks this year for all the big blessings and the little blessings and to share some of our blessings with somebody who is struggling right now. This world is full of beauty. Relax and take a look at this video.

You'll love it! Every time I watch it I feel inspired and full of gratitude.

I hope you'll all have a wonderfully blessed Thanksgiving holiday!

We've Got Issues! Six of them now - Come See...

Time sure does pass fast when you're having fun! It seems like yesterday that we launched WomenCorp magazine. That was three months ago! We just published issue #6 this week and it's chock full of even more over-the-top, you've just gotta have this information. One of our newer partners, Cynthia Bazin, founder of Private Investigation & Security Consulting Agency, The Bazin Group, LLC, shares a few critical safety and security tips.

Joan Stewart, AKA The Publicity Hound, tips us off to a superb idea for publicity using holiday gift guides. Check out her article and you'll get some great ideas.

Pat Lynch of Women's Radio profiles The Breast Cancer Fund and its focus on the environment. Although we hear more and more about men who develop breast cancer, it's still typically women, and we need to stay as educated as possible about the disease, and offer support whenever we can to other women who are struggling with it.

Jody DeVere of AskPatty.com, asks us, "Teen Drivers: Track Them or Trust Them?" You'll find some intriguing information and stats that will get you thinking in this article.

We're planning a couple of surprises during the next several weeks. Be sure to check back regularly and see what we're up to!

Bart Smith and the PJ Camp Adventure

If you didn't sign up for Bart Smith's PJ Camp, you're missing a fantastic program!

Bart Smith is one of the WomenCorp partners and his niche is Infopreneuring. His background is utterly fascinating and what he's teaching us PJ Campers (yep, I've gone to Camp!) is phenomenal. Bart has been-there, done-that, and he's giving us the low-down on how to start a business - the right way, to run the business - the right way, and how to market a business - the right way.

Now, how many of us have learned by trial and error how to do all of this - the wrong way? I know I have. When this guru tells you "do this" and this guru tells you "do that" and you do this and then do that, well what do you get? No joke. You get nowhere. You'll be missing a lot of money and still not anywhere near the success you deserve. Skip all that and take Bart's advice. He is joined by business partner and life coach Mandy Pratt. Her experience is truly impressive and her energy just reaches out to all of us with a huge dose of confidence and inspiration. Put on your PJs and get to work!

p.s. I'm hoping Bart and Mandy will offer their PJ Camp again, so check out his site and let him know if you're interested.

Moms and Careers - Do They Work Together?

There's one problem with being a mother and being a career woman...

No time for self!

It's the age old problem and one we haven't completely solved. That's why I'm excited to be talking with the founder of the site and parenting show "Yummy Mummy" in a special WomenCorp seminar this coming Tuesday. Get the details on my interview with Erica Ehm .

I've been through it as so many women have when we're trying so hard to manage other people's lives as well as our own both at home and at work. I plan to ask several questions when I interview this woman business owner who makes it work because somehow she's managed to stay sane through her television show, authoring a book and being a mom.

If you're interested in hearing what Erica Ehm of Yummy Mummy has to say, you're welcome to listen in through the computer as I quiz her or call in on the telephone line. It ought to be fun! Sign up for the telephone seminar on Tuesday, Oct 31st "The Balance Myth Demystified - The Truth To Surviving YummyMummihood"

Do You Do Halloween? Ever Had a Halloween Party?

It's just a little over a week away! Those little angels and super-heroes are gonna come knocking on your door...or will they? Times have changed so much. We have to think about safety on so many levels - for ourselves and our kids. The general rule of thumb these days is if you welcome those trick-or-treaters, leave your front porch light on. If you don't want them, then leave the light off. Not that everybody follows that rule, but, at least there's a "rule".

What about parties? At home? Pretty good idea, huh? A lot of churches, schools, and even neighborhoods are having "fall festivals" to keep the risks to a minimum, to have a lot of fun for the kids (us big kids too!), and make lots of new friends in the process. Keeping in mind that some people don't celebrate Halloween, and some celebrate it as a religious day, and some just don't like the commercialism surrounding it, have you ever thought about doing your own party? Maybe your neighborhood needs somebody to organize a party for the kids. What about a Thanksgiving party? So many holidays this time of year and that's a good chance to throw a party.

If you've got any good reason to throw a party, check out The Party Works site. If you can dream it up, they've probably already got it. There are birthday party theme packages, individual party supplies, and lots more. Oh, and yes, they do have Halloween party supplies and decor. Also, check out the article in this issue of WomenCorp magazine. It's titled "Halloween Traditions for the Not-So-Spooky Family". You'll love it!

Have a fabulous - and safe - weekend!

Bart Smith, Mandy Pratt, and PJ Camp...What a Teleseminar!

If you missed last night's teleseminar with Bart Smith and Mandy Pratt, you missed a super-charged hour with one of the Internet's true super-heroes.

Bart's training site, is an excellent source of information. He and one of his business partners, life coach Mandy Pratt, have teamed up to teach you how to work at home in your PJs. We hear so much these days about how to build your own business, start a business, work at home, or telecommute, you can't help but wonder how much of that info being hawked is real and how much is a scam.

Well, I'm here to tell you a lot of them are scams. Not this one though.

Bart is the real deal. He has worked at home, in his PJs and created multiple successful streams of income. In their upcoming PJ Camp, Bart and Mandy are all set to teach you how to do the same using your personal interests, talents and skills. Check out Bart's site, stop by WomenCorp and see what else we've been doing, and, last but not least, think great thoughts and reap great results!

A Car Named Sally - and Breast Cancer Awareness

It's a busy week for me. Barely time to catch my breath! Everybody I run into this week seems to be experiencing the same thing right now. One thing I often remind myself is to be grateful. Grateful for good health and the ability to actually do all that I do. For most of us, there is so much to be grateful for.

One of our WomenCorp lifestyle authors, Jody DeVere, is a great example to us in how to balance family and career obligations, as well as service to others. Her most recent article in the WomenCorp magazine, in recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, profiles the limited edition 2008 Pink Warrior Mustang. A portion of the sale proceeds of these cars goes to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Since we women are generally the ones to battle breast cancer (there actually are some men), please read this article, and then make me two promises.

(1) Do something special for another woman this week in honor of all the women who are battling breast cancer or who lost their battle with breast cancer, and,

(2) Adopt the gratitude mindset and thank someone you have never thanked before for the work they do, for the service they provide, or just for the kindness they show to you and to others. That "thank you" will go a long ways and you can bet that person will feel great and pass those good feelings along.

That's all for now. Hope you all have a fantastic day!

Should you Make the OTHER Career Choice?

Entrepreneur: The OTHER Career Choice

Do you know that over 70% of households in the US want to become entrepreneurs?

Stress, lack of security, and the strong desire to have flexibility and a lifestyle that includes working their passion are propelling huge numbers of women to seek the other career choice. Work at home moms often make the choice based on their desire to be home with their children and still bring income into the family and that choice has been a great one for a lot of moms (and their families).

Lynn Carnes has created another thoughtful and inspiring video to help you decide if the other career choice may be a good choice for you. Whether you want to work from home at a computer, work at home as an independent contractor, be a salesperson for an established company from your home office, or have a unique home-based business such as online retail or auction sales, there are many choices out there and surely one to fit you to a "T".

We're already pulling together issue four of the magazine. Be sure to watch for the new issue on Tuesday, October 16.

Now, go see Lynn's video!

Craiglist: A Powerful Publicity Tool and More!

We've now released three issues of the magazine and the response has been fantastic.

One of the articles in this issue is written by Joan Stewart, also known as "The Publicity Hound", and she certainly knows her stuff when it comes to the world of PR. This particular article is so intriguing to me because Craigslist is not typically what you think of when you think "press release" or PR, right? Well, take a look at Joan's article and you'll see what I mean!

While you're at it, explore the WomenCorp site, too. We're adding more free content, more partners, and would love to hear from you! There is a fabulous freebie when you sign up to receive the free magazine.

How To Put Fun In Your Life

If your world feels like it's a constant whirlwind, if you feel overextended, underappreciated and stressed to the max...you're not by yourself.

Women today are sandwiched between managing kids and grandparents, long hours at work, juggling too much and are tired, tired, tired. Leisure seems impossible and having fun, even more impossible. After all, you're just too busy, right?

Having fun doesn't have to take a lot of time. It does require planning, though.

To get you started here are five short and simple ways to have fun in just a few minutes a day. There's also suggestions for a 3 hour, 2 day or extended fun activity that you can plan quarterly.

Five simple ways to have fun:

1. If you're a woman that has a loads of people calling you daily for your advice/support/help, give yourself a break. Take just one day a week away from your cellphone. Call it FREEDOM DAY. Use the extra time to enjoy the peace, quiet and beauty around you.
2. Take just 15 minutes in the morning to read the comics or do the crossword puzzle in the paper. Make it an exercise just like biking for health and realize that having fun is just as important to your health.
3. Buy Erma Bombeck, Calvin & Hobbs or other humourous books with short chapters and take to work. Plan a 20 minute break after you work 2 hours where you can get a drink of your favorite beverage and then just sit and read.
4. Plan to call one old friend a week and catch up. Rotate the friend you're going to call and make it a weekly activity at a certain time of day. Science proves that those of us who have close friends and relationships tend to live longer.
5. Shop for shoes. I say that with a laugh because most women I know love shopping for new shoes. At lunch instead of running to the local fast food restaurant or eating at your desk, take an apple and pack of peanuts or protein bar with you to eat on your way to the shoe store. If new shoes don't delight you then go to the park, the museum or other place that you can enjoy for just an hour.

Now, make having fun for just a few minutes a day a priority! Write your "appointment with fun" in your calendar just like a meeting. Plan and it will happen. Don't plan and you'll go right back to your same old daily routine that kept you from enjoyment in the first place.

Be sure to plan longer, more extended periods of fun once a quarter. We all need a break to rejuvinate and refresh ourselves. With having time out for fun we become more productive after we return or when we know we've got something fun to look forward to AND we're more pleasant to be around for family and co-workers.

Three quarterly "appointments with fun" ideas:

1. When was the last time you went to a play, concert, wine tasting or even something like bowling? Plan a night out for a unique activity (keyword: unique) with your spouse, partner or friend. It should be at least a 3-4 hour event that is out of the normal routine and one that you would truely enjoy. Begin scanning the papers or online activites today for ideas coming up in the next 3 months. Take steps to make it happen and put it on your calendar.

2. Book a hotel overnight in a city that is about 2 hours away. It can be at the lake, the beach, the mountains or even the middle of a busy city that you love, but never have time to visit! Take your closest friend or spouse and enjoy dining out, shopping, visiting sites or whatever you like to do.

3. Take a trip with girlfriends. It's one of the hardest things for women to do is to purposely take time away for their enjoyment with friends. But a girlfriends trip can be one of the most rewarding because a woman's idea of fun can be completely different than when you have a man along.

If you don't have girlfriends that want to do the same things you do, then consider making an effort to find some. One of our women partners did just that when she created the Womens Travel Club 17 years ago...and has it grown. I recently had the opportunity to interview Phyllis and learn about two unique trips she's created for women who want to join other women for exciting travel adventures. Click the arrow to listen.

Or you can right click this link, "save target as" and save it to your computer to listen.

You know that having fun can extend your health and even your life, right? So take steps today...and plan to HAVE FUN!!

Franchise Opportunities For Business Women

Twice as many women today are going into business for themselves as men. Will you be one of them?

Here's the real facts of business startup...Most people don't make it.

Why?

Because they don't have a realistic business plan and expectation of what it will take. Often they end up spending themselves into debt while they experiment with different ways to open and operate a business or they don't earn enough to survive for long.

This is where a proven plan and product can be easier, cheaper and more likely to succeed.

One way to do it is to buy a franchise. But there are hundreds out there. How do you know what's right for you?

There are companies that specialize in analyzing franchises. Some are good at it and some will push anything. For my money, I'd seriously consider the one that's turning franchise operators away because they want only the best for their clients. FranNet is one such company - headed up by a woman, no less!

The key to find the right business for you is to know who you are, what talents you have and what interests you. You not only want, but need, a business that is a perfect fit for your interests and skill sets to be the most successful. One of the reasons I like the way FranNet does it is that they act as consultants, actually taking you through a series of questions first to identify a true match.

Whatever you do, plan to succeed by doing your homework FIRST! And remember that you don't have to go it alone. There are coaches and mentors who can help you identify what's right for you, then focus to achieve it.

The Tale of Going From Peanut Butter To Lear Jets

The rags to riches story is always a good one. But how often is the hero of the story actually a woman? More than you might think...

I read this in a recent article from the Daily Progress "it’s nice not to be the only woman in the lecture hall each day. Every woman likes to have girlfriends,” she said." The she was Jamala Massenburg, who was hired as a product design engineer for the Ford Motor Co. After succeeding in her career, she still wanted to improve her credentials. That's when she became one of the increasing, but still small numbers, of women to enroll at Darden School of Business.

Jamala, like many women, found that it was much easier to succeed when surrounded by other like-minded women. Does that mean, though, that you've got to enroll in business school to get ahead? The answer is unequivocably NO!

You can be whatever you want! Many women have proven it.

It does mean, though, that it's easier when you have friends. Many of us have felt that we must do everything ourselves, but the most successful women are often women who found mentors to provide inspiration, motivation and information. Many of these women, after finding success, became mentors to others as their way of giving back.

Kandee G is one of those women. An inspirational and motivational speaker who went from being a single mom who ate peanut butter from a jar to a lady who's flown on lear jets to her speaking events, Kandee G proved woman can change their lives.

Her latest book, Now Boarding: Next Stop Your Remarkable Life demonstrates exactly how a business woman can change her life by change her life by changing her thoughts.

She a guest speaker at the upcoming teleseminar on Tuesday, Sept 4th. All WomenCorp subscribers are invited to attend. Hear Kandee G

How to Be Unique in a Competitive Business

The countdown is on! WomenCorp magazine's official launch is right around the corner and we are so excited! Behind the scenes here, there's a whir of activity, keyboards tapping, phones calls being made, last minute tweaks to this page and that, and the satisfying next-to-last check on the publication checklist. You know how that feels, right? When we first got the idea for the magazine, we had to seriously think about how we'd set it up and what we had to offer that was so unique. Why Acknowledging Talent is Crucial To Survival in Business

One of the leading management experts in the world, Peter Drucker, said "Increasingly the success, indeed the survival, of every business will depend on the performance of its knowledge workforce."

Yet companies are letting talented business women walk out the door every day.

The solution should be clear, find a way to keep them or lose your competitive edge. A large company cannot afford to be without talent. The problem is, old style management treats all employees the same. Instead of acknowledging unique differences, they encourage people to blend in and fit the mold.

Change must occur rapidly or these companies will continue to lose talent, particularly women. The reason for this is that women are tired of the rat race and they're starting to become vocal about it. It's showing up everywhere in women's magazines, bookshelves, radio shows and television commentaries.

Women are tired of doing all and being all without any recognition.

Tom Peters wrote about a National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) survey conducted to find out how women were acknowledged at work. The results were...
28% said verbal
2% said monetary
3% said tangible rewards or incentives
43% said a combination
24% said praise isn't often awarded.

That is why so many women are starting their own businesses. They simply see no point in toiling away for hours to produce results that are never acknowledged.

It's a new day. Women will start new businesses and women will be successful simply because they understand the value of providing emotional support, that feeling of satisfaction from simply being acknowledged, combined with pay for performance to keep their good employees.

Will existing large corporations catch on? Time will tell.

Are You This Spunky?

You gotta admire this...

A 75 year old black woman, Barbara Hillary, who is also a cancer survivor trekked all the way to the North Pole in mind and body numbing tempereatures with polar bears and shifting ice just to make it interesting.

From what I've read about her, she did it "Just Because!"

What's your "Just Because"?

Is there something you've always wanted to do but haven't found time, money or courage to do it?

We all find it easy to invent reasons not to pursue our dreams, especially as busy business women. But the risk is becoming a drone, just working day after day, with no fun and enthusiasm for life.

So, I'm here to challenge you.

If you have ever been around an older friend, parent or grandparent who yearns for the days when they could do more than just sit in a chair and think, you know how sad it is to hear them
say "I wish I had."

Don't let yourself end up in a rocker one day wishing you had.

Get out there and do whatever it is that challenges you, but also makes your heart sing. Find the time for your own personal development and I believe you'll find yourself waking to the possibilities still to come. You'll also improve other aspects of your life from reinvigorating yourself...even your business life.

From voice lessons to getting an image consultant to learning how to play the guitar or hiking just to the top of the ridge near your home, seize the opportunity to learn or do something new.

It could just be the kickstart you need to become a new and more fun you.

Wars In Our Neighborhood

Nevermind the war in Iraq, we've got full scale wars being planned and developed in our own neighborhoods.

I don't care where you live, you've got them. People full of negative energy who are using it to create chaos and disruption.

Ladies, it's time we stopped it.

What got me stirred up was when I read about a "free militia" organization about 2 hours from my home that was just caught creating plans to confront and mow down some Mexicans with machine guns. They were fully armed and had thousands of pounds of grenades and weapons.

What in the world?? Are they crazy?

This sort of thing comes from fear. Unless we get women in positions of economic influence, I'm afraid this sort of thing will keep going on. The reason we need more women in powerful positions is that women tend to connect and talk when confronted with problems, rather than resort to physical solutions. It's the gentler way. That's why at WomenCorp we're dedicated to helping women become financially independent.

These militia groups only form because of fear, often caused by poverty. Jealousy is the offspring of people in need. But rather than see it as a problem of poverty, they find something else to blame. Namely people.

I don't want to live with hate and violence. I don't want to fear for my children's lives. Do you?

Please join me in helping women. If you see a woman who could use your help to step up the ladder out of poverty, please consider extending a helping hand.

The world will be a better place for it.

The Woman Coach Wins With Attitude

What an uproar! Did someone just call young women athletes 'nappy headed hos?"

If you haven't heard or read about it, a radio personality used this term when referring to a woman's basketball team that became a major contender for the NCAA women's basketball tournament, but lost in the end. Vivian Stringer is their coach and mentor.

But she got my attention when I saw her response to the name calling. She was a good model for women on how to confront adversity with the right attitude and look like a winner. Her dignified response to the man and the frenzie caused by his remarks was superb.

Facing a negative situation with confidence, she publicly called for accountability from a well connected and influential man. What made me admire her response was how she could have used the media interviews to verbally slap back, but didn't. She responded with dignity and grace.

For a number of years now, American women seemed to have taken a step backwards in getting the respect they deserve. Women have been called all kinds of unflattering and insulting names in songs, magazines and television shows.

Unfortunately, I feel the real problem is that we allowed it. We should have put a stop to it long ago...and I mean ALL women should do this. The only way to be respected is to have enough respect for yourself and your gender by taking a stand when needed.

Thank you, Ms. Stringer, for being such a great role model.

Women Who Travel For Business

I'm stuck in an ice storm in Dallas and can't get out.

Stuck in a hotel with nothing to do. I began thinking about women who travel on business.

Have things changed for them in the last 25 years?

According to statistics, 42% of all business travelers are women. So we're increasing in numbers. That led to an interesting phenomenon. Now the hotels provide more women friendly items such as lotion in the bathroom.

We've still got one barrier though. That is overcoming our fear of going to the bar or restaurant by ourselves.

For some reason this doesn't seem to bother men, so you see them standing around, talking to strangers and enjoying companionship. Most women are totally intimidated by it....sometimes with good reason.

We, too, might like companionship when we're alone in our travels but we don't want men hitting on us. We're also not as confident about starting up conversations with people we don't know in that setting. Men seem perfectly comfortable just sitting there. Not us!

Seems this might be an interesting and enlightening challenge for hotel chains that want to attract women. How can you help your women business traveler to enjoy her hotel stay or travel experience more.

How about if we collaborate and think up ideas, then send them in to companies who might want ideas that help them build their client base through attracting women travelers?

Speak up now....send me your favorite suggestion for a woman friendly travel idea that a company could provide. If we get a few, we can send them in to companies that might take action and we might just begin to change the experience to a better one for women business travelers.

Test Your Happiness

Anticipating the new year is fun because we look for a new beginning.

But why is it that we feel we need a new beginning? Is it because we've been trained to believe that we're not perfect enough and that we need improvement.

All the diets, exercise programs and new years resolutions won't help if we don't fix one thing first. That one thing is our ability to be happy. Are you ready to experience real joy and happiness?

If so, then you must do one thing. That is, be happy in the present moment. That means NOW!

Today I heard an excellent interview with a woman who is an editor at Prevention Magazine. She talked specifically about happiness and how we can achieve it. Here's some of the best points she made:

1) Positive Thinkers are Happier. Optimism and happiness are directly correlated because optimists feel more hope for better things to come. Scientific research has actually proven that those who are optimistic versus pesimistic on average are much happier.

2) Optimists make more money. Research demonstrated that when a group of over 900 people were tested and given scores for their ability to be optimistic, the correlation in terms of money making was an additional $33,000 for each 1 point increase on the scale over the average.

3) Self reflection can actually lead to less happiness! Though it may be counter-intuitive,
when you stop to consider your happiness, you are actually internally trying to find out what's wrong in your life in order to evaluate if you are really happy. It leads to thinking about what's wrong, rather than what's right. So her point was that it's better to just stop focusing on it and get out there and enjoy the present moment!

Her solutions for becoming more happy?
1) If you are pesimistic and a worrier, stop and take your worry to the extreme. Think of all the bad and possible outcomes from the first worry to the silliest extremes. For example, if you are stuck in traffic, you might take that all the way to "I'll lose my job, and then I'll end up on the street and I'll be a begger for the rest of my life and my family will disown me and I'll starve to death!" You'll begin to realize just what a time waster worrying can be and you might even go the other side and consider all the positive outcomes of the same event.

2) Fake it till you make it. Even if you don't FEEL happy, ACT happy! One study put 50 people in a room and split them. Half were told to ACT happy, regardless of how they felt. At the conclusion of the study they then reviewed the happiness scores of each person. Those who had ACTED happy actually felt happier and ranked themselves as feeling happier than those who did not pretend to be happy.

OK, so what does this have to do with Secrets of Successful Business Women?

In answer, I'll ask you a question that you might want to reflect upon this new year.

"Exactly by what criteria do you judge happiness?"

Is it money or power? Or is it the ability to feel good, to feel joy, in the present moment?

Wishing you and yours the very happiest 2007!

Warm Regards,
Roxanne
